Nothing compares to the experience of watching a beloved film that’s been painstakingly restored and remastered from the original negative. The increased sharpness, greater resolution and deeper colours reveal never before seen details, breathing new life into a once forgotten story. At Nulight we oversee the entire remastering process from tracking down original negative, scanning, editing, restoration, grading and DCP mastering.

Return to the Source

Film prints contain a tiny fraction of the detail evident on the original negative. To experience the original vision the director had for the film we must return to the source.

At Nulight we specialise in high-quality, digital reconstruction of entire titles using camera original negatives – be they A & B rolls, individual rushes, or even mixed format – for preservation or re-release in up to 4K.

With demand for new content at an all time high there’s never been a better opportunity to remaster classic titles for a new audience.

Authentic Reproduction

Each scanned negative is organised by scene and edited to exactly match the picture guide. Meticulous attention is given to ensuring a frame-perfect reproduction from matching fades and transitions to including any camera effects that might have been added during or after filming.

Any instability and splice bumps are removed using professional motion-tracking and de-warping tools. Using this approach we are able to authentically reproduce the original vision for the film.

Restore Picture & Sound

Picture and sound is fully restored to the highest standard using Digital Vision Phoenix and HS-Art Diamant restoration software. The majority of issues commonly found on film such as dust, dirt, sparkle and flicker can be semi-automatically removed.

For more severe damage requiring full-frame digital reconstruction we employ a detailed quality control process to inspect every frame for imperfections and meticulously repair any issues by hand.

Colour Grading

Our award winning colourist will match grade the colour of every scene using any surviving print as a guide. Where no print exists, or colour has faded with age, we will work closely with you and researchers to try to accurately recreate the original colours.

Sometimes there is an opportunity to work with the original filmmaker to refine the look of the film in the grade using technology only dreamed of when the film was first made.

Deliver your finished film in any standard format including DPX, Quicktime or DCP. We also support a wide range of colourspaces including rec2020, P3 and rec709.
