Nulight Studios has won its second award in as many months for picture enhancement on the Apple TV Series, Earth at Night in Color.
The latest accolade was presented by the 2021 Royal Television Society at the Craft and Design Awards at the Hilton Hotel in London.
The award for Picture Enhancement is shared with Colourist Adam Inglis as well as Tom Payne, Head of Development at Offspring Films, who couldn’t attend and so was represented by the founders of Offspring Films Alex Williamson and Isla Robertson.
In response to the win Alex commented:
“It’s a deserved tribute for a brilliant team effort. Pioneering new techniques to transform bubbly pink pixels into sumptuous colour night footage has been quite the technical challenge – and I’m delighted all our hard work has been recognised by our peers.”
Sam Livingstone, representing the team at Nulight said:
“Its been a remarkable journey from the first grainy rushes we received to award winning Natural History. I think these awards recognise the role that new technology and innovation play as we continue to look for new and compelling stories in the wild.”
Earth at Night In Color was the first natural history series to be filmed exclusively at night, in total darkness, using light sensitive cameras. Nulight worked closely with the team at Offspring to take the resulting grainy footage and apply noise reduction and further image enhancements to reveal the same detail as film shot in daylight.
